LEICESTER COLLEGE BIG GIG | 13/12/18

Updated: Jan 14, 2019

Each year, Leicester College give their music students a platform to be able to showcase their work and talents. This happens at multiple times at venues such as The Cookie, The Musician, The Shed and Bistro Live. However their annual "Big Gig" that runs every December is certainly one of the highlights and for many of the students, it's the first ever performing experience they get. I really enjoyed the night and thought I'd write this review to reflect that. Check it out below.

ChiChi and Taylor

One of the first performances of the night was by the confident and well presented duo ChiChi and Taylor. The pair performed their own brilliant acoustic renditions of popular RnB hits. The gentle and well controlled, yet powerful tone of ChiChi’s voice combined with Taylor’s spectacular playing of the guitar made for a smooth and elegant sound. They were a hit with lots of support from the audience and I’d be interested to hear them experiment with different styles, the pair would be a great addition to any open mic night and I encourage them to get out there and perform more. They definitely have what it takes to make a name for themselves in our local scene.

The Prosonics

The alternative/Indie rock four-piece appeared mid line-up, performing a set entirely made up of original music. Their modern, clean and uplifting sound will have you humming their material for days afterward. Charlotte Bows (vocals) performed with confidence and style, involving and speaking to the crowd at every chance she got. Mark Zanker (Drums) has certainly earned his special mention, his energy and high level of playing was definitely one of the highlights of this performance. They are a very talented group of composers and they were one of the tightest and best performing bands of the night, in my opinion. I'm really looking forward to seeing their performances at later dates.

Special Mentions

Although "ChiChi and Taylor" and "The Prosonics" were highlights of the night, special mentions go out to the following acts for their brilliant performances:

  • Dani - A student at Leicester College who performed a beautiful solo acoustic set. Her voice was absolutely phenomenal, not to mention her strong ability to rap. I was very pleasantly surprised by this performance. Definitely one to look out for.

  • No Time For Breakfast - They performed a set made up both of covers and originals. Special credits to Teagan who made the effort to play lead guitar and also sing, she did a brilliant job of it. The vocal harmonies between the two vocalists were chillingly beautiful and have more than deserved their special mention.

  • Xander - Our final special mention goes to Xander. He brought to stage a set of Bo Burnham covers that had the audience chuckling. It was really refreshing to see a slightly different type of performance compared to others during the course of the night. I really enjoyed this set.

The gig was a huge success. Leicester College is teaching the musicians of tomorrow and I would definitely recommend you to attend one of their external gigs if you can. They take their students to various venues around the city. Finally, I'd like to say a thank you to all the staff that work tirelessly to run these gigs for us. The effort is very much appreciated.
